Thomas was born in Detroit and grew up in Beverly Hills, California, as the eldest of three children to parents Rose Marie Cassaniti and comedian Danny Thomas. She has a sister named Terre and a brother, Tony Thomas, who works as a producer. Her father was a Lebanese American of Roman Catholic faith, while her mother had Sicilian American roots. Her godmother was the actress Loretta Young. The nickname “Marlo” originated from her childhood mispronunciation of “Margo,” which her family affectionately used.
Thomas attended Marymount High School and later graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in education, stating, “I wanted a piece of paper that said I was qualified to do something in the world.” During her time at university, she became a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

In 1977, Marlo Thomas appeared on the talk show Donahue, where she and host Phil Donahue experienced “love at first sight.” They married on May 21, 1980. After their marriage, Donahue relocated from Chicago to New York City, bringing some of his sons and his daughter to live with Thomas while he continued producing his talk show there. Thomas became a stepmother to Donahue’s four sons and daughter from his first marriage.
In an interview with AARP Magazine in May 2011, she explained her approach to her role as a stepmother, stating, “From the very first day, I chose not to be a ‘mother’ to Phil’s children in the traditional sense—they already had a mom. Instead, I aimed to be their friend.” She expressed pride in the strong friendships she has maintained with them for over 30 years.

Marlo Thomas is an actress who started out at a young age appearing in television shows. During her early career, she guest-starred on such series as “Ben Casey,” “My Favorite Martian” and “Bonanza.” She found a major success in 1965 when she was given the role of “Barefoot” more Apart on London’s stage. After the success, she went on to be a featured cast in other Broadway shows. But another breakthrough in the career of Thomas was to come when she landed her first starring role on a television series, that Girl.
A female-led sitcom about a woman who lives alone accountable to no one in the Internet, including friends which should spur your recall so much good music and fashion. It followed a young girl who moved to New York City in pursuit of her dreams on Broadway. From 1966 to 1971, “That Girl” was a hit with audiences.
